Chandigarh Residents of four-wheelers will pay Rs 500 for the pass, while two-wheeler owners will pay Rs 250.
A big relief to the daily commuters, Chandigarh Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla has declared the introduction of a monthly parking pass to the residents of the city. The new system will take effect on January 27, 2026, and will be applicable in all the paid parking lots within the Union Territory.
The project will make the parking of the residents easier, as well as reinforce the financial status of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC).

With the new scheme in place:
- Four-wheelers: ₹500 per month
- Two-wheelers: ₹250 per month
The monthly pass will enable the parking at all the identified paid parking spaces in Chandigarh with unrestricted park access without having to pay money daily.
Office-goers, shop owners, and those who travel around in the city on a regular basis are expected to be part of the beneficiaries of the move by civic officials.
Increase in Municipal Corporation Revenue
According to the Mayor, the purpose of the parking pass system is not just to make the lives of people more convenient but also to enhance the revenue system of the city. As per estimates, the scheme would yield close to 50 crore of money per year, which would be utilized in development of the civic system and provision of services to the people.
Such revenue would fund the upgrades of infrastructure, sanitation and maintenance activities throughout Chandigarh.
Mayor Discourses Financial Problems
During the media address, Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla was not afraid of discussing the financial situation of the Municipal Corporation when she took power.
She disclosed that when she took over, the MCC was experiencing a serious cash crunch to the level that the salaries of the employees were hard to maintain. Nevertheless, the situation was stabilized with the help of the coordinated efforts with senior officials and the assistance of the central government.
Central Grant of 125 Crore Helped Stabilise Finances
The Mayor attributed the granting of a 125 crore grant by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to the enhanced financial well being of the corporation.
She also credited the assistance of the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Gulab Chand Kataria and said that the action came at the right time to guarantee that the city did not face any problem with the civil functions.
Major Infrastructure Works Underway
Justifying the work done by the Mayor in development, she mentioned several major projects:
- Improvement of water supply and sewerage pipelines was done in various sectors and the rest of the work is still in progress at an estimated cost of 25 crore.
- Strengthening of the roads in V-4, V-5, and V-6 roads, and the work estimated to cost close to 20 crore is underway.
- The Chandigarh Administration is undertaking the V-3 road upgrade which will save the Municipal Corporation about ₹45 crore.
These projects are designed to enhance day to day commuting and sustainability of the cities.
Important Advances in the Treatment of Waste
Some significant advances in sanitation and waste management were also mentioned by the Mayor:
- Almost 95 percent of the old wastes in the Dadu Majra dumping ground have been removed.
- A new project on Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant has been started, which should enhance waste processing and serve in clean energy objectives.
Officials believe that such moves are a significant move towards sustainable urban management.
Revenue Generation Advertisement and Vendors
In order to tighten the belt, the Municipal Corporation has made a number of steps revenue-oriented:
- The tendering of 16 unipoles which is set to bring about 20 crores.
- Rights to advertise on blocks of public toilets (estimated 32 crore).
- Adverts at 36 roundabouts, which generated close to 2 crore.
Also, 1,041 vendors were provided with an opportunity to pay outstanding licence fees in installments. It has already recovered approximately 2.5 crore, and more 6 crore is likely to be recovered by March 2026.
Zero-Waste City Events and Showcase the Efficient Planning
The successful organisation of big city events was also mentioned by the Mayor, such as the 53rd Rose Festival 2025 and the 38th Chrysanthemum Show 2025 which were organised with zero spending and zero waste.
Such events, she opined, demonstrated the capability of Chandigarh to conduct such masses of people and at the same time be environmentally responsible.

Chandigarh will be a more resident-friendly and financially viable urban model with the introduction of the monthly parking pass. The plan will minimize the number of inconveniences faced by commuters on a daily basis besides providing a reliable income to be used in the development of the civic.
It has been suggested by the authorities that additional digitalization and surveillance can be implemented in the future to enhance parking operations throughout the city.
