A Star Final Bow: The Dharmendra Legacy

Today, the Indian film industry, as well as the millions of fans all over the world, is bereaved after the news of the death of the legendary actor Dharmendra. The great icon, lovingly referred to as the He-Man of Bollywood, died in Mumbai on Monday, November 24th at the age of 89 thus marking the end of a glorious movie career.

Although the family initially did not confirm the news, it was confirmed by filmmaker Karan Johar who later tributes the legendary figure with an expression of emotion. The loss was called an ending of an ERA by Johar who hailed Dharmendra as a bonafide Legend and the personification of a HERO in mainstream cinema.

The burial of the favorite actor was also in Juhu crematorium, Mumbai which turned the gloomy place into a meeting point of the most prominent people in the film fraternity. Dharmendra enjoyed such a tremendous respect that the turnout was huge with his colleagues and family attending to give him a farewell.

Those who came to mourn over him were his wife, actress Hema Malini, his sons- Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol and his daughter Esha Deol.

Some of the giants in the Bollywood came to offer their condolences and pay their respects to the family which brought out the close relationships that Dharmendra had established over his decades long career. Some of the prominent guests included:

  • The Bachchan Family: Amitabh Bachchan, with his son Abhishek Bachchan and a grandson, Agastya Nanda.
  • The Khans: Salim Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan.
  • Other Icons: Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Gauri Khan and director, Ashutosh Gowarikar.

The fact that there are so many perennial industry players highlights the gaping vacuum that was created by the exit of Dharmendra.

A Career Defined by Charisma

Although the family recently posted news regarding the health of the actor, stating that he was released from Breach Candy hospital and was recovering back at home after a long time of sickness, the country still awoke with the devastating news.

A sixty-year career in the movie industry made Dharmendra unforgettable to audiences, playing both romantic and lovable heroes as well as a traditional symbolic hero, the action-filled veeru in Sholay. His last appearance on the screen is expected to be in the movie Ikkis, together with Agastya Nanda.

It is not only a tragedy to the industry to lose a megastar, but a human being. With his blessings, his hug and his amazing warmth, Dharmendra will be sorely missed as Karan Johar so eloquently put it in his tribute: The defeat is well experienced, yet the movie enchantment and passion of Dharmendra will surely motivate generations.

The Nation Pays Its Respects: Tributes from the Highest Office

The sorrow at the death of Dharmendra was felt much further than the boundaries of the film industry and it turned into a national lamentation. Reaffirming the titanic cultural influence of the veteran star, congratulations were coming at the top offices of India. Prime minister Narendra Modi took a moment to condole through social media where he said that the demise of Dharmendra was the end of a generation in the Indian cinema. 

The Prime Minister continued to compliment his skills in infusing charm and depth to all his roles and further commended the simplicity, humility and warmth of the actor in his personal life. This was also reiterated by the President Droupadi Murmu which cemented the legacy of Dharmendra as a monumental, popular role model who has enriched the lives of generations of film enthusiasts.

A Last-Minute Trip through High Security

The emotions of the people were so intense that they had to take increased security in and around the Juhu crematorium where the last rites had taken place. In the meantime, as family members, such as Hema Malini and Esha Deol, arrived at the service, huge masses of heart-saddened fans and media representatives thronged the service to have one final glimpse of their He-Man.

Though an official announcement by the Deol family was yet to be obtained as late as afternoon, the sheer size of the celebrity and people’s attendance was the best witness to how much the nation still loved and respected the late Dharmendra. It will be a great loss to the cinema industry due to his magnetic presence on and off-screen.
