India Withdraws Diplomats’ families from Bangladesh just weeks before the February elections, triggering fresh concerns over regional security and political stability.
India has advised the families and dependents of its diplomats and government officials posted in Bangladesh to temporarily return home, citing security concerns ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12.
India Withdraws Diplomats
The move has been described as a precautionary measure, taken in view of the evolving political situation and increased public activity expected during the election period.
Advisory Issued as Preventive Step
Sources familiar with the development said the advisory applies only to non-essential family members, while Indian diplomats and officials will continue their assignments without interruption.
Officials clarified that the decision is not linked to any immediate threat but is meant to ensure safety during a politically sensitive phase.
Indian Missions Continue to Function Normally
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka and other diplomatic posts across Bangladesh remain fully operational. All consular services, diplomatic engagements and coordination with Bangladeshi authorities are continuing as usual.
“This is a routine security review step often taken during elections or periods of uncertainty,” a government official noted.
Background: Bangladesh Election Context
Bangladesh is preparing for a crucial national election following months of political developments. Large rallies, protests and movement of people are expected across the country, prompting heightened security arrangements.
During such periods, several countries review the safety of foreign personnel, especially families of diplomats.
No Change in India–Bangladesh Relations
Indian authorities stressed that the advisory does not signal any strain in bilateral relations. India and Bangladesh continue to maintain close cooperation in trade, infrastructure, border management and regional security.
Officials reiterated that diplomatic engagement between the two nations remains strong and ongoing.
A Common International Practice
Experts say temporary withdrawal of diplomats’ families during elections or unrest is a standard international practice followed globally and should not be seen as a political message.
The advisory is expected to remain in effect until the election process concludes and the security situation stabilises.
