Keshav Athmanand Maharaj was born on 7 February 1990 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.His family has its origin in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh in India- his great-grandfather had immigrated to South Africa in 1874.
He went to Northwood boys high school in Durban where he grew up as a spinner.
At 16 years old, Maharaj became a first-class cricketer in 2006-07 and made his KwaZulu-Natal debut. He was selected in the Dolphins franchise due to his promotion in the domestic league.

Keshav was awarded his Test debut in South Africa national cricket team on 3 November 2016 against Australia and he became the 327th Test player to play in the team.
