The Indian Army has also strongly appealed to the young generation in Punjab to come out and join the Sikh Regiment, one of the most historic and decorated infantry outfits in the country since the regiment is experiencing a visible drop in the number of fresh recruitment.
Army authorities have also been apprehensive about the fact that less young men of Punjab are volunteering to serve in the military, which was under strain on the regiment that has been historically supported by warrior communities of the state.
A Battalion Made of Heroism and Self-Sacrifice
The Sikh Regiment has a mythical status in Indian military history. The regiment is well reputed as being disciplined, brave and with an unparalleled battlefield status, turning out to be decisive in nearly all the major conflicts India has ever fought, both during the World Wars and after gaining independence.
The Sikh Regiment is one of the most respectable units of the Indian Army with more than 75 battle honours, 38 theatre honours, and more than 1,600 gallantry awards.
Young men of Punjab have always been proud of enrolling in the regiment, and the spirit of the Saint-Soldier tradition since Sikh history began has continued.
Why Do Recruit Numbers Continue to Decrease?
Though this regiment has such a glorious past, the Army officials have realized that the regiment is currently experiencing a severe recruitment problem.
A number of social and economic reasons are thought to be behind the fall:
- Increased migration outside the country to study and work.
- Switching career goals among the youth.
- In some areas, there are issues of drug abuse.
- Increased demand on the jobs in the private and overseas jobs at the expense of defence services.
These changes have diminished the pool of qualified and desiring soldiers on the conventional recruiting pool of the regiment.
Emotional Plea of Army to Youth of Punjab
The Army officers have urged the youth of Punjab to rejoin with their future, and view military service as not only a source of income, but as a source of honour and national pride and service to the nation.
Punjab has traditionally been the source of strength of the Sikh Regiment. The country requires its young people back again, said an Army official.
The ad focuses on the fact that serving in the Army will provide:
- Honorable and well-managed life.
- Consistent career and financial stability.
- Leadership development
- Retirement benefits in the long-term.
- The glory of serving the country.
Appreciation of Exceptional Performance Under Pressure
In early this month, the Army celebrated several battalions of the Sikh Regiment with their outstanding performance in operations which once again affirms that the regiment remains in the best traditions of a high-level professionalism.
Authorities emphasized that even though the quality of troops are exceptional, sufficient manpower is necessary to ensure the readiness of the operations in the future.
More Than a Job — A Way of Life
The Army emphasized on the fact that the assignment to the Sikh Regiment is a legacy that has been passed down by generations.
The regiment is reminiscent of the teachings of Guru Hargobind Sahib and Guru Gobind Singh who foresaw the warriors dedicated to spiritual power and warrior power as well.
Serving in the Army has long been a source of honour to most families in Punjab, an aspect that the forces now hope the younger generation will be able to take pride in reclaiming.
The Road Ahead
The Sikh Regiment is now constituted of various regular battalions, Territorial Army and Rashtriya Rifles units. The regiment currently enjoys operational performance but the future of this unit depends on a fresh involvement by the young generation in Punjab.
The Indian Army will also work harder to engage in outreach efforts, education and recruitment exercises throughout the state to motivate young aspiring recruits to think about a uniform.
Final Word
With the growing defence power of India, the Army is of the opinion that it is important to revive the old military culture of Punjab.
The forces message is obvious:
The history of the Sikh Regiment still exists -but it is up to the current generation of young people to carry it forward.
