A hardworking and persevering man named Moti Nagar in Ludhiana, has made it to history by becoming a Member of Parliament candidate in South Australia Elections. Started as a small life in Punjab, nowadays it is a strong illustration of how determination can open the doors to the whole continent.
The story of Baldev “Sunny” Singh is the story of a thousand Indian young men and women who run away to other countries in search of a better deal and who illustrate that nothing lasts long unless a person chooses not to throw his or her hands up.
Simple Start-up in Ludhiana
Sunny Singh was born and brought up in the Moti Nagar neighbourhood of Ludhiana where he attended his early education. Like most young Indians, he aspired to have a stable future and he made a decision to relocate overseas with his wife, Soni Singh.
The couple immigrated to Australia in 2008 on a study visa with few things other than hope, bravery and the ambition of working hard.
Struggles and Survival in a New Country
It was not easy at the start of life in a foreign land.
To earn his living and have money to cover the costs, Sunny Singh began to work as a taxi-driverr. The lifestyle included working long hours, being in new environments, and cultural issues. Nevertheless, he did not consider hardship as an obstacle but rather a learning experience.
He slowly ascended the ladder at his place of work through hard work and hard lessons and became the manager of the same taxi firm.
From Employee to Business Owner
Rise of Ludhiana Man
Sunny Singh is a good entrepreneur who has worked many years and made a risky move to venture into the world of entrepreneurship.
He is now a successful travel and transporter who has a business in South Australia. His company manages:
- Over 23 taxis
- Around 35 tempo travellers
- A number of commercial tractors.
The fact that he was a taxi driver and became a business owner is a very powerful message that perseverance and integrity do work.
Entry into Public Service
It was natural that the increasing interaction of Sunny Singh with the local community led him to the service of the people.
He also competed in local elections and became a councillor of Port Augusta City Council where he served two consecutive terms. Under his rule, he was busy with:
- Community development
- Multicultural inclusion
- Migrant family support.
- Enhance harmony of different cultures.
His leadership made him to be respected not only by the Indian diaspora but also by the residents of the locality of Australia.
Fighting Challenges with Courage
Similar to other migrants, Sunny Singh had his moments, and he had an experience of racial incident when the character was just starting his life in a foreign land. He never gave in to negativity by letting it ruin his spirit but rather reacted in a strong manner.
The experience made him believe more in unity and he strived more to achieve social harmony and representation in the society.
MP Ticket for South Australia Elections
In a major political milestone, the South Australian Liberal Party has officially granted Sunny Singh the MP ticket for the Giles constituency in the upcoming South Australia Elections scheduled for March 21, 2026.
Speaking about the opportunity, he described it as a responsibility rather than just an achievement.
“This is a big honour for me. I am ready to give my 100 per cent for the people and the community,” he said.
Strong Support from the Indian Community
Sunny Singh has made a significant contribution to the enrichment of Indian culture in the area. He played a major role in forming a Gurdwara Sahib in the region that is today used as a spiritual and social centre.
The region is dominated by the permanent presence of the Indian families of about 15-20 people, whose political journey is regarded as a source of pride to the whole community.
Indian Youth Abroad Communication
Telling his story, Sunny Singh motivated young Indians to avoid their loss of hope when they were abroad.
Australia, according to him, has good employment opportunities and good working conditions with a friendly environment particularly to those who have not lost their focus.
What he is saying is that success does not happen quickly but in the long run, patience and honesty always pay.
Family Pride Back Home
Although Sunny Singh is still continuing his political career in Australia, he is still attached to his home town of Ludhiana. He has a sister and a father and a mother who are still residing in this city and are so much proud of his success.
His success as a man is not just an individual thing to the people of Moti Nagar but also evidence that the world’s dreams can be born in the local streets.
