Tata Nexon Reclaims the Throne: Crowned India’s Best-Selling SUV of FY26

Tata Nexon: The financial year 2025-26 has officially wrapped up, and if there’s one thing Indian car buyers have made crystal clear, it’s that they love their SUVs. But in the fierce battle for the top spot, a familiar champion has made a massive comeback.

The Tata Nexon has officially reclaimed its title as India’s highest-selling SUV for FY26, dethroning last year’s winner, the Tata Punch, and fending off the ever-popular Hyundai Creta. Let’s break down the numbers and see how the heavyweights stacked up this year.

The Comeback King: How Tata Nexon Took the Lead

It wasn’t just a narrow victory for the Tata Nexon; it was a dominant performance. The compact SUV recorded total wholesales of 2,16,054 units over the financial year. That translates to a massive 32% year-on-year increase.

What’s driving this surge? The Nexon’s winning formula seems to be its unmatched versatility. By offering something for everyone—from standard petrol and diesel to factory-fitted CNG and highly successful EV variants—Tata has managed to capture almost every type of buyer in the sub-four-meter segment.

Hyundai Creta Holds Strong in Second Place

While the Tata Nexon took the gold, the Hyundai Creta proved once again why it is the undisputed king of the midsize SUV segment. Raking in 2,01,921 units, the Creta comfortably secured the second spot overall. Despite intense competition from new launches, the Creta’s premium appeal, feature-rich cabin, and brand reliability continue to make it a default choice for buyers looking to upgrade.

The Shuffling of the Top 5

Perhaps the biggest surprise of FY26 was the Tata Punch. After dominating the sales charts and taking the crown in FY25, the micro-SUV slipped to the third position with 1,83,980 units sold.

Right on its heels in fourth place was the trusty Maruti Suzuki Brezza, securing 1,80,104 units. Rounding out the top five was Mahindra’s rugged workhorse, the Scorpio range (which includes both the Scorpio Classic and the ScorpioN), registering an impressive 1,78,800 units.

Mahindra Thar and Fronx Make Major Moves

Looking beyond the top five, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx continues to be a massive hit, grabbing the sixth spot with over 1.72 lakh units sold.

However, the real head-turner this year was the Mahindra Thar lineup. Bolstered by the launch of the five-door Thar Roxx, which gave the hardcore off-roader a much broader family appeal, the Thar family climbed to the seventh spot with 1,26,261 units.
