Dr. Sumbul Desai: the Driving Force behind the Apple Watch Health Innovation.

Currently, the Vice President of Health of Apple is the MD Dr. Sumbul Desai; she featured heavily in the keynote of the Apple Watch Series 6. She introduced the break on the new built-in blood oximeter, which is now available, its functionality, and its importance in personal health monitoring, particularly at the pandemic.

The Series 6 apple watch launch event also revealed a significant change in Apple, such as the choice not to include the power adapter to the Apple Watch box in order to make the Apple Watch Series 6 more environmentally-friendly. More importantly to health, the new model came with life saving features via blood oximeter. Dr. One of the people who enabled this feature is Desai.

Dr. Sumbul Desai also stated during her presentation that three studies were initiated. To examine how these research projects can be used to manage conditions that impact the lungs and heart, longitudinal blood oxygen and other health measures captured by the Apple Watch will be used in these research projects.

Career Path and Accomplishment at Apple

In the case of Apple, the position of the health feature capabilities of the Apple Watch was still in the process of development when Dr. Desai became part of the company in 2017. She has since contributed to the development of the Apple health ecosystem, such as ResearchKit, HealthKit, and CareKit.

She has got her experience in the nexus of medicine and technology. Prior to her time in Apple, Dr. Desai worked in major leadership capacities at the Stanford Center of Digital Health as a Vice-Chairperson of the Department of Medicine and Chief Digital Officer. She served as a Clinical Associate Professor for more than nine years at Stanford.

Bridging Tech and Healthcare Stanford

Dr. Desai was keen on the need to incorporate technology in healthcare even before joining Apple. She co-created ClickWell, a wonderful Stanford telemedicine project, which provided patients with virtual consultations, which did not require leaving their homes and going to the clinic, saving time and energy.

  • In less than one year of its introduction, 55-60 percent of the 4,000 clinic visits were moved to a virtual environment by ClickWell.
  • She has also been a strong advocate of digital health devices.
  • Associate Chief Medical Officer, Strategy and Innovation was another position at Stanford.

Before joining Stanford, the career of Dr. Desai has had a variety of experience:

  • Research Fellow, Kaiser Family Foundation (2009-2010).
