Royal Enfield: The global custom motorcycle scene has just witnessed another stunning transformation of an Indian powerhouse. At the latest edition of The One Motorcycle Show in the United States, Thor Drake of See See Motorcycles pulled the wrap off his newest creation: The Reload 650.
Based on the versatile factory platform of the Royal Enfield Shotgun 650, this custom build takes a radical, high-octane departure from the donor bike’s factory bobber aesthetic, shifting gears into pure, nostalgia-fueled road racing territory.
The Vision: Channeling 1980s AMA Superbike DNA
The styling direction of the Reload 650 is no accident. Builder Thor Drake brings authentic racing heritage to the workbench, having clinched the title of AMA 250GP road-racing national champion back in 1998.
Channeling the aggressive, boxy charm of 1980s AMA superbike grids, Drake stripped back the Shotgun’s standard cruiser lines. In its place sits a period-correct, custom rear section featuring a distinctive square tail unit and a dedicated solo-seat configuration. The bodywork instantly recalls the era when production-based superbikes ruled the tarmac with pure muscle and minimal aerodynamic clutter.
Royal Enfield Hardware: Built for the Track, Raised for the Street
While the heart of the machine remains There’s smooth, torque-rich 648cc parallel-twin engine, See See Motorcycles completely overhauled the cycle parts to complement the track-focused theme:
- Premium Stance: The bike sheds its standard rims in favor of classic, lightweight five-spoke Morris wheels.
- Upgraded Suspension: Tweaked front and rear suspension setups provide a sharper stance and more aggressive handling dynamics.
- Acoustic & Power Boost: A custom 2-into-1 S&S race exhaust sweeps down the side, promising a louder, more visceral exhaust note and optimized airflow.
- Ergonomic Twist: Despite the racing bodywork, Drake opted for tall bar risers paired with a wide handlebar. This deliberate addition offers the rider an upright, commanding posture—perfect for flat-track style control or urban cruising.
A Growing Legacy on the Global Stage
Interestingly, the Reload 650 shares its monochromatic, high-contrast color scheme with last year’s custom Shotgun 650, built by Winston Yeh of Rough Crafts, which debuted at the very same event. However, where Rough Crafts went for a dark, sleek, modern urban chopper look, See See Motorcycles has gone all-in on aggressive retro motorsport nostalgia.
Royal Enfield’s strategic push to hand its 650cc twin platform over to top-tier global custom houses continues to pay off. The Reload 650 stands as a masterclass in versatility, proving that beneath the Shotgun 650’s production roadster shell lies a chassis ready to morph into a race-bred icon.
