Xiaomi 17: Xiaomi is officially drawing a line in the sand. At a packed media briefing in the heart of Jung-gu, Seoul, the global tech giant announced the official launch of its Xiaomi 17T smartphone.
This isn’t just another routine product drop. Led by newly appointed Xiaomi Korea President Summer Feng, the launch marks a calculated, highly aggressive strategic pivot. Xiaomi is openly elevating South Korea to a core priority market, aiming to directly challenge local heavyweights on their home turf.
“We want to begin a new second act in South Korea,” Feng stated candidly, admitting that while Xiaomi dominates as the world’s number three smartphone brand globally, its footprint in Korea has historically lagged. To fix that, they are leading with an absolute price-to-performance war.
Xiaomi 17 Price Disruption: Flagship Specs, Mid-Tier Pricing
Xiaomi’s strategy to crack the highly saturated Korean market boils down to simple math. The Xiaomi T-series has always focused on keeping premium specifications while trimming the fat on price, but the 17T takes this formula to an extreme level.
- The 256GB Base Model: 799,800 won
- The 512GB Upgrade: 879,800 won
To put those numbers into perspective, the Xiaomi 17T launches at roughly 43% to 44% of the cost of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S26 Ultra. By offering near-identical premium experiences at less than half the price, Xiaomi is intentionally squeezing its profit margins to win over budget-conscious, tech-savvy local buyers.
Leica’s Premium Optics Move Down the Lineup
For the first time in the T-series history, Xiaomi isn’t holding back on the camera hardware. The company has brought its highly regarded partnership with German optics legend Leica directly to the base Xiaomi 17T.
The standout feature is a massive upgrade to a Leica 5x periscope telephoto camera (a 115mm equivalent), completely replacing the mediocre 2x zoom of previous generations. Powered by a 50-megapixel sensor and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), the camera system delivers up to 10x optical-grade zoom and an astonishing 120x AI Ultra Zoom.
Xiaomi is also debuting its “Leica Live Moment” and “Leica Live Portrait” features on this tier. These software tools capture motion and emotional nuances split-seconds before and after the shutter is pressed, generating incredibly fluid, natural background blur without looking artificial.
Under the Hood: Massive Power and Worldwide Firsts
Xiaomi didn’t just spend their budget on the cameras; the rest of the spec sheet reads like a high-end luxury device.
An Eye-Comfort First Display
The front of the phone features a 6.59-inch 1.5K AMOLED display running at a buttery-smooth 120Hz refresh rate. It can crank all the way up to an ultra-bright 3,500 nits to combat direct sunlight. More importantly, it features high-frequency 3,840Hz PWM dimming and “Xiaomi Vision Care” to eliminate screen flicker. This combination has allowed the Xiaomi 17T to become the first smartphone in the world to secure four distinct TÜV Rheinland eye protection certifications.
Silicone-Carbon Battery Evolution
To support the energy-hungry MediaTek Dimensity 8500-Ultra processor, Xiaomi packed a massive 6,500mAh silicon-carbon battery into the chassis. Despite the phone measuring a modest 8.2mm in thickness, the high-density battery delivers up to 17.2 hours of constant use. When it does run dry, the 67W fast charging fills it back up in minutes, and a 22.5W wired reverse charging feature lets you use the massive cell as a power bank for your other gadgets.
Availability and Local Integration
Recognizing that international brands often struggle in Korea due to ecosystem differences, Xiaomi is launching the 17T with full, native support for NFC-based TMoney Mobile, the nation’s most popular transit and payment standard.
Pre-orders for the phone—available in Violet, Blue, and Black—open immediately and run through June 4. Official retail shelves will stock the units starting June 5, selling across major local channels including Coupang, Naver brand storefronts, and Xiaomi’s official online and physical retail spots.
